This page provides Information regarding First United Methodist Church's youth scholarship and loan programs for church members.

January 2012

This is the time of year when high school seniors and others attending college should be aggressively pursuing funding sources for continuing education.  There are sources available through our local church, the Iowa United Methodist Conference and the greater United Methodist denomination.

There are two programs sponsored by First United Methodist Church of Burlington:  The Kenneth Koch Memorial Scholarships are provided by the United Methodist Men and low interest loans are provided by the Mildred Westfall Trust.  Both of these programs are administered by our own church scholarship committee.  Forms for both can be obtained by clicking on the links below on this page and printing the PDF files.  They are also available at our church office at 421 Washington Street.  The deadline for submission of these application forms will be the last Friday in March.

In addition, the Elinor Lundgren Music Scholarship to Iowa Wesleyan College gives priority to members of First United Methodist Church, Burlington, as they consider awarding the scholarship.  Access to this scholarship is through the Iowa Wesleyan Admissions Office.

The Iowa United Methodist Foundation provides additional scholarships for many circumstances.  Check out their website at www.iumf.org and click on the "scholarships" tab in the left hand column.  Eligibility requirements and application forms are downloadable from that site.

Furthermore, the United Methodist denomination offers several means of support to those seeking highter education in the forms of scholarships, grants and low interest loans.  To learn more about these sources please visit www.gbhem.org or contact the  Office of Loans and Scholarships by telephone at 615-340-7346.  All applications and awards are handled online.

A Robert D Rowley Memorial Scholarship is available through Two Rivers Bank for those who are pursuing a degree in the field of health care at Southeastern Community College, Iowa Wesleyan College or The University of Iowa.  Applications can be obtained from the bank through John Walz at jwalz@tworiversbank.com or by calling 319-753-9136.

The Board of Church and Society of teh United Methodist Church is conducting an essay contest and will present three $500.00 scholarships.

The essay contest is open to students who are high school juniors or seniors during the current school year (2011-2012) and who live in Iowa or attend an Iowa high school.  Students need not be members of an United Methodist Church or any other religious body.

"The Road to Peace Between Israelis and Palestinians" is the topic for this year's contest.  Essays must be less than 1,000 words.

Send essays to: Paul Linn by email at pjlinn@,msn.com before March 23, 2012.  Also include a brief summary of activities in which you participated in your school or community including efforts for social justice.

Awards will be presented during Iowa Annual Con ference of the United Methodist Church, June of 2012 in Des Moines, Iowa.
