Music has long played an important role in worship at Burlington's First Church. Musical organizations that regularly participate in our services include the Chancel Choir and the Inspiration Ringers handbell choir. The Chancel Choir is directed by Dr. Tim Ahern, Dean of Humanities and Social Sciences at Southeastern Community College. The choir rehearses at 7:30 A.M. on Sundays prior to the worship service. All persons are welcome to join the choir. For information, contact Tim at 319-752-2399.
The Inspiration Ringers are directed by Roxy Riessen, retired Southeastern Community College Instructor in Computer Technology. Prior to her second career as a computer "guru," Roxy was a highly successful vocal and general music teacher. The handbell choir is composed of ringers from several area churches. They perform for worship services once per month with occasional additional performances in the community. They rehearse on Wednesday evenings from 7:00 to 8:30 P.M.
In addition to her position as the director of the Inspiration Ringers, Roxy serves as the organist for our congregation, accompanying hymn singing and playing a prelude, offertory and postlude for each worship service. Roxy recently led our organ committee in its efforts to select a builder to replace our pipe organ which was destroyed in the 2007 fire. Our new organ is being built by David Cool of the Temple Organ Company of St. Joseph Missouri. It will be a three manual, forty-five rank organ and we are trememdously excited that this fine instrument will be a part of our worship when the rebuilding of our church is complete.
